Abstract [en]

This report presents the findings of the business case screening and business model scenario analysis for end-of-life lithium-ion battery (LIB) recycling technologies under the ELiMINATE project. Applying the Needs, Approaches, Benefits, and Competition methodology with techno-economic and lifecycle assessments, we identify H2SO4-NMC and H2SO4-Novel as the top-performing LIB recycling technologies in both the European Union and South Africa contexts. We evaluate different value chain scenarios for EU and SA regions, concluding that establishment of an in-house recycling plant by battery producers could be a profitable venture. This comprehensive study offers valuable insights to prospective investors and stakeholders interested in the global LIB recycling market, considering environmental factors, evolving regulations, and cost-efficient production capacity.
