Abstract [en]
The chemical footprinting method ProScale did originally cover direct worker exposure and has, under BioSusTex T6.3 and Mistra SafeChem Phase II, been expanded to include ProScale Service Life (ProScale-SL), ProScale for Environment (ProScale-E), and ProScale for Indirect human Exposure (ProScale-IE). These four models are all part of the ProScale Suite. The development of ProScale-SL and ProScale-IE was initiated with a literature review to understand the landscape of existing models that potentially could act as building blocks for the ProScale method, which combines traditional risk assessment tools with a life cycle thinking. For ProScale-SL, the European Centre for Ecotoxicology and Toxicology of Chemicals (ECETOC) Consumer Targeted Risk Assessment (Consumer TRA) method was found the most promising to build upon. For ProScale-IE no existing method was found and instead, the new module was developed to fit the ProScale Suite directly, based on regulatory concepts and data from EU Regulation No. 1272/2008 on Classification, Labelling and Packaging of substances and mixtures (CLP), EU Regulation No. 1907/2006 concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) and related guidance.
A result of the expansion of the ProScale Suite is the submission of three manuscripts to the journal Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management (IEAM). They account for the ProScale Suite, the ProScale-SL module and the ProScale-IE module. The ProScale 2.0 web tool has been built on the latest coding pracices by the IVL IT team with the aim to provide a user-friendly experience as well as future proof the tool. The tool has been tested by several testers with basis in a test protocol that the IVL IT team developed for the purpose. Another part of the work with the web tool was the collection of data to the associated ProScale substance database. Data collection of parameters needed for calculating ProScale scores with all modules has been conducted for the >1000 substances with harmonized classifications under CLP. This is a first iteration of the database for the ProScale 2.0 web tool that aims to provide a start for the ProScale practitioner to do assessments. The ProScale 2.0 Methodological guidance and the ProScale 2.0 Practical guidance are available in Appendix A and Appendix B respectively.
