Abstract [en]

istra TerraClean (MTC) is a research programme focusing on developing smart engineered materials and devices for the treatment of air and water. The second phase of the programme (MTCII) commenced in the fall of 2021 and is scheduled to conclude by the end of September 2025. The aim of Work Package (WP) 3 in MTCII is to provide input regarding human health and environmental impacts to the various case study packages (CSPs) involved in MTCII for supporting the development of smart, flexible and effective materials. The work in WP3 has been divided into three tasks: 1) Appraisal process development, 2) Life cycle-based risk and opportunity mapping (LCBROM) and safety assessments, and 3) Life cycle assessment (LCA), Life cycle costing (LCC) and applied ecotoxicity testing.

This report, D3.8, is an external synthesis report summarizing the series of internal (D3.7) and external (D3.6) deliverables in Task 3.3 Tier 2 appraisal: • D3.7 Part 1: Life cycle assessment of the application of a CDI to reduce pharmaceutical residues at AstraZeneca WWTP – Summary report • D3.6: Toxicological evaluation of CDI treatment to reduce pharmaceutical residues at AstraZeneca WWTP – Summary report • D3.7 Part 2: A prospective life cycle assessment and life cycle costing analysis on a PFAS sensor – Summary report The purpose of Task 3.3 in WP3 was to provide a broad and more detailed analysis of the environmental performance of selected innovations. In addition to the wide range of impact categories applied in the LCAs, one case study was also complemented with ecotoxicity studies based on laboratory experiments, providing an in-depth analysis of the toxicological effects of implementing the selected innovation and a proof of concept. The toxicity studies were performed by SLU in collaboration with KTH, RISE and AstraZeneca. The second LCA was complemented with an LCC to evaluate costs of the innovation along its life cycle.
